What is Acne?

Acne vulgaris, or acne, is the medical term for pimples. It occurs in 85% of people between the ages of 12 and 24. After the teenage years, the presence of acne decreases sharply to about 5%. Adult acne is more common in women than in men. It is a condition with a relatively large impact on quality of life.

Acne is a disease of the hair sebaceous gland complex. Sebaceous glands usually open into hair follicles. These sebaceous follicles can be found all over the body, except on the palms and soles of the feet. The density of the sebaceous gland follicles and sebum production are greatest in the face, back and chest. Sebum has a number of important functions, namely: preventing moisture loss from the skin, protecting against bacteria and fungi, and keeping the skin supple. When the sebaceous gland outlet becomes clogged, acne occurs.

What Are the Causes of Acne?

The exact cause of acne is not yet fully known. It is clear that acne is caused by a combination of factors that can strongly influence each other. The four main factors are:

1. Increased sebum production
2. Changes in the cornification process (skin peeling)
3. Presence of bacteria
4. The release of substances that cause inflammation

Various factors can aggravate acne such as hormonal processes, external mechanical and chemical factors and hereditary factors. Various medicines can also lead to acne.
The relationship with smoking, with poor hygiene and with certain foods has never been well established until now.

What is the treatment for acne?

There is no standard treatment for acne. An acne treatment by the skin therapist may include:
– Manual skin cleansing: removing and emptying/puncturing blackheads and pimples.
– Deep cleansing of the skin by means of a peeling; mechanical peeling (microdermabrasion), chemical peeling (based on, among other things, glycolic acid, fruit acid, trichloroacetic acid). The purpose of this is to remove dead, loose skin cells, so that the pores are less blocked. When a skin is peeled regularly, blackheads will no longer form so quickly and the sebum will be able to drain more normally.
– Advice and self-management for skin care and product use, among other things
– Medical camouflage therapy for, for example, disturbing scars, spots or hyperpigmentation.

Although the possibilities and effectiveness of acne treatment have increased enormously in recent years, acne remains a chronic condition. Acne didn't go away overnight. As mentioned earlier, there is no standard single acne therapy. A combination of techniques, with or without supportive medication, will determine if the acne improves. It is often a lengthy treatment process in which we are happy to guide you.
